What Are You Waiting For?

On this day before Easter – Holy Saturday – Christians all over the world are anxiously awaiting Sunday. Easter Sunday. The day that our Lord and Savior defeated death once and for all and walked out of the grave. Alleluia!

            But on this day, we wait. We know what comes next, though. We’ve read the book! We know we just have to get to tomorrow for the celebration to begin. Those who witnessed Jesus’ death, though, did not know then what we know now. They watched Jesus be crucified on Friday and then didn’t know what was next. Many of them probably thought there was no next. Even though Jesus had said He would rise in three days, not one really understood what that meant. They had been waiting for centuries for the Messiah’s return and they thought Jesus was it. But now what?

            And they began waiting again. Some near the tomb. Not thinking He would walk out, but to finish the burial rituals. His disciples went back to work with their thoughts of what the last three years had meant. Little did they know they only had to wait a couple of days for it all to make sense!

           What about us? What about you? What are you waiting for?

What is it that you don’t understand?

What is it that you have been praying for?

Where have you been waiting for God to move?

What have you been asking God to heal?

Whose heart have you been asking God to soften?

What situation have you been praying to be resolved?

The questions – the needs – the unknowns – the prayers – the list – could go on and on. We are all waiting… For something. Somethings.

What I want to encourage you with today is this – Sunday is coming! It may not be tomorrow for that thing – or things – you have been seeking, but your answer is coming. It may not look the way you want or the way you think it might, but it’s coming! Keep praying. Keep being steadfast. Keep persisting. Keep knocking, and asking, and believing. He WILL answer you!

So, what if you don’t believe this whole Jesus thing? What if you believe Easter is really just about bunnies and eggs and candy? Well, that can change. Give Him a chance! Just for a day – and tomorrow would be a GREAT day – just pretend that maybe, just maybe, Jesus is who He said He is. Listen with believing ears rather than cynical ears. See with believing eyes rather than skeptical eyes. Just try it. What are you waiting for?

Last week, Barbara and I spent our 25th anniversary celebrating with a little much needed R&R and “just us” time in Charleston, SC. Wisdom Times Three

  Recently, I’ve found myself studying and reading a lot about wisdom. It hasn’t been an intentional thing, it just dawned on me this morning that much of what I’ve been consuming in terms of books and podcasts have had this underlying theme. I don’t believe this is a coincidence. (You can definitely place me in the camp of “ all things happen for a reason ”, so I generally don’t put a lot of stock in the “ it’s just a coincidence ” explanation.)           What struck me earlier today was something new. I will typically journal (for those unfamiliar, yes, that word can be used as a verb) about what I read during my early morning “quiet time.” Often, it will turn into a prayer of sorts, for myself or others. Proving What is Good, Part 2

We've been looking at the  Peace Prayer of St. Francis the last couple of days (click here to see the entire text of the prayer). It seems that to really live this out, you have to live almost counter-culturally. Today I'd like to dive into the next couple of lines to see what that might look like. where there is doubt, (sow) faith; where there is despair, hope; These two lines just speak to me of encouragement and the importance of being an encourager to those around you. Faith and hope are also often inextricably linked as we read through scripture. The author if Hebrews even uses one as part of the definition of the other, "Now, faith is confidence in what we hope for..." ( Hebrews 11:1 NIV ).
