What Are You Waiting For?

On this day before Easter – Holy Saturday – Christians all over the world are anxiously awaiting Sunday. Easter Sunday. The day that our Lord and Savior defeated death once and for all and walked out of the grave. Alleluia!

            But on this day, we wait. We know what comes next, though. We’ve read the book! We know we just have to get to tomorrow for the celebration to begin. Those who witnessed Jesus’ death, though, did not know then what we know now. They watched Jesus be crucified on Friday and then didn’t know what was next. Many of them probably thought there was no next. Even though Jesus had said He would rise in three days, not one really understood what that meant. They had been waiting for centuries for the Messiah’s return and they thought Jesus was it. But now what?

            And they began waiting again. Some near the tomb. Not thinking He would walk out, but to finish the burial rituals. His disciples went back to work with their thoughts of what the last three years had meant. Little did they know they only had to wait a couple of days for it all to make sense!

           What about us? What about you? What are you waiting for?

What is it that you don’t understand?

What is it that you have been praying for?

Where have you been waiting for God to move?

What have you been asking God to heal?

Whose heart have you been asking God to soften?

What situation have you been praying to be resolved?

The questions – the needs – the unknowns – the prayers – the list – could go on and on. We are all waiting… For something. Somethings.

What I want to encourage you with today is this – Sunday is coming! It may not be tomorrow for that thing – or things – you have been seeking, but your answer is coming. It may not look the way you want or the way you think it might, but it’s coming! Keep praying. Keep being steadfast. Keep persisting. Keep knocking, and asking, and believing. He WILL answer you!

So, what if you don’t believe this whole Jesus thing? What if you believe Easter is really just about bunnies and eggs and candy? Well, that can change. Give Him a chance! Just for a day – and tomorrow would be a GREAT day – just pretend that maybe, just maybe, Jesus is who He said He is. Listen with believing ears rather than cynical ears. See with believing eyes rather than skeptical eyes. Just try it. What are you waiting for?

Last week, Barbara and I spent our 25th anniversary celebrating with a little much needed R&R and “just us” time in Charleston, SC. There were several times in the weeks leading up to our trip, however, where it seemed we might not make the trip. O Holy Night

When do you start listening to Christmas music in your house? That's usually a question that has a definite answer. in our home, it's typically the Friday after Thanksgiving - that's the day that we usually break out the Christmas music and start. I must confess though, this year I started a little earlier. I had a CD or two in my car going before Thanksgiving. For some reason, I was anxious to get an early start! One of the great things about Christmas music, especially if you are Christian, is that singing about Christ becomes "mainstream"! Sure there are lots of Christmas carols that really have nothing to do with Christ, but many of them do. And in regards to those that do, I have a couple a couple of questions for you... Do you really listen to the words? Do you really think about the lyrics that you are singing? Have you thought about the power of what we are proclaiming when we sing some of these songs? What Brings You Wonder?

Over the last few weeks, our church has been doing a sermon series called "Wonder". It has been especially impactful to me, during this season of Advent, to "re-remember", if you will, all of those things that bring me wonder. Those things that just make me stop and say, "Wow, would you look at that?" Sometimes it's something I see, other times it's a situation, still others it's a memory that is brought to mind. I wanted to use this space today to record just a few of these wonder-filled moments for me over the last few weeks. I would love it if you would share some of yours in the comments, as well.
